Course Summary

This course, violin basics for beginners, is aimed at introducing students to the stringed instrument, violin and playing it in Hindustani classical style. This course will give students a brief about the violin coming to India and its prominence as an accompanying instrument. Students through this course will learn about the different parts of the violin like the bow, strings, pegs etc. They will then be taught the posture and the holding of the violin, alongside the understanding about the placement of fingers. By the culmination of the course, the student would have an understanding about the different parts in a violin and their purpose. The finger placements on the violin and the very important posture. Students would have gained playing knowledge of raag bilawal (major scale) in sargam and palta.

About the Course

This long term course is designed for students interested to learn to play Hindustani style of music on the string instrument, violin. After the commencement of the course, students will get a brief about the violin and its arrival in India. Information on the violin used as an accompanying instrument will also be shared on request of students. Moving forward in the course students will learn about the different parts in a violin, like a fretboard or neck, strings, the bow, pegs etc. Further on students will be taught the right posture when sitting down with a violin. The different styles of holding the bow and the placement of fingers on the fretboard. Students will also learn about tuning the violin. Next up students will get introduced to playing the violin. They will first be taught the crucial seven notes sa, re, ga, ma, pa, dha, ni. Students will be made to practice the seven notes before moving on to exercises that will make them play the notes in ascending and descending order. Further ahead, students will be taught raga bilawal. Indian ragas are played or are categorised as per the time of the day they can be practised. Raga bilawal is a morning raga exhibiting immense devotion. Students will learn to practice raga bilawal in different formats such as sargam or playing of the different notes adhering to the rules applicable when playing raga bilawal. Students will also learn alankars or foundational exercises for beginners as they are easy to grasp and play. Students will through the period of this course sharpen their playing skills through sargam and alankaras practiced in raga bilawal.

About Mr. Johar Ali: Mr. Johar Ali can easily be termed a thoroughbred in music. His rich lineage, starting from his grandfather Ustad Ali Baksh, considered to be the creator of the patiala gharana of music, leading to his father Ustad Gohar Ali Khan from Raipur considered being one of the finest exponents of the violin. It is but natural that Johar Ali was destined for fame. Being the eldest among four siblings all of whom are musicians, Johar’s instrument of choice was his father’s favourite, the violin. Getting trained from his father ensured Johar would eat, drink and sleep music. That he did, to become one of the renowned violinists in present day India. Johar’s accolades have come by the dozen and lining out all would take hours. As a matter of distinction, some of Johar ji’s well-known accomplishments include performing at the SAARC summit in Bangladesh and Nepal. He also performed at the 60-year celebration for UNESCO in Paris. He composed the music for South Pacific Games held in New Delhi. Apart from performing extensively in India, Johar has travelled the world showcasing his genius with the violin.
