Basics Of Flute | Hindustani Classical
This course is for students interested to learn to play the bamboo flute in Hindustani classical style. This course will commence by teaching students about the twelve notes, comprising major and minor notes in Hindustani music, such, sa, re, ga, ma, pa, dha, ni and the way to play them on the flute. Students will get to practice the seven notes in in different scales and patterns before getting introduced to taal or rhythm cycle.

Course Details
Students undergoing this Fifty-Four week course will be first introduced to Hindustani flute and the holding of the instrument. Students knowing the way to hold and blow the flute will be at an advantage. Students after their initiation into playing the flute by correcting the holding and blowing a flute would get introduced to the seven plus 5 fundamental notes of Hindustani classical, comprising of major and minor notes such as sa, re, ga, ma, pa, dhi, ni. Moving on students will be taught to play shuddh and komal swar or notes; in other words, students through this exercise get to learn about major and minor scales. Further on students get to practice the notes in different patterns, practising ascending and descending notes. Ahead in the course students get introduced to talas or rhythmic cycle that adhere to a specific number of beats. In this instance, the teacher will teach students teen tala which consists of 16 beats, dadra, a six beat tala, rupak tala consisting of 7 beats and keherwa tala made up of 8 beats. Progressing further in the course students after learning about talas get to learn ragas such as bhoopali, yaman and durga. Students by the culmination of this course also learn to play the Indian national anthem and a few major scale based Bollywood songs.

About Suchismita Acharya: Suchismita Acharya is renowned flautist known to the world as an exemplary disciple of renowned and highly decorated flute exponent, Padmavibhushan Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia. She is also known to be the other half of the duo, known as ‘flute sisters’. The flute sisters consist of Suchismita and her sister Debopriya both refined artists excelling in playing flute in Hindustani style. Suchismita did her masters in music from Rotterdam World Music Conservatory in Amsterdam, through the Nuffic scholarship she earned from the Indian embassy in Netherlands. She has also been honoured with the Sangeet Prabhakar, (bachelor degree in music) for flute and vocal and Sangeet Praveen, (masters degree in music) flute and vocal from the distinguished Prayag Sangeet Samiti in Allahabad. Suchismita has been fortunate to have performed in the company of her guru, besides travelling in and outside of India, exhibiting her talent at different concerts. Suchismita’s talent and skill have been further accentuated with the recognition and honour of being identified as Sur Mani in 2001 and the Sahara Excellence Award in 2013.

Students are advised to have a bamboo flute preferably of the G Key or A Key
It would be an advantage if the students enrolling for this course is aware of holding and blowing into the flute.
