Course Summary

This course is for students interested to learn to play the bamboo flute in Hindustani classical style. This course will commence by teaching students about the twelve notes, comprising major and minor notes in Hindustani music, such, sa, re, ga, ma, pa, dha, ni and the way to play them on the flute. Students will get to practice the seven notes in in different scales and patterns before getting introduced to taal or rhythm cycle.

Description

Students undergoing this Fifty-Four week course will be first introduced to Hindustani flute and the holding of the instrument. Students knowing the way to hold and blow the flute will be at an advantage. Students after their initiation into playing the flute by correcting the holding and blowing a flute would get introduced to the seven plus 5 fundamental notes of Hindustani classical, comprising of major and minor notes such as sa, re, ga, ma, pa, dhi, ni. Moving on students will be taught to play shuddh and komal swar or notes; in other words, students through this exercise get to learn about major and minor scales. Further on students get to practice the notes in different patterns, practising ascending and descending notes. Ahead in the course students get introduced to talas or rhythmic cycle that adhere to a specific number of beats. In this instance, the teacher will teach students teen tala which consists of 16 beats, dadra, a six beat tala, rupak tala consisting of 7 beats and keherwa tala made up of 8 beats. Progressing further in the course students after learning about talas get to learn ragas such as bhoopali, yaman and durga. Students by the culmination of this course also learn to play the Indian national anthem and a few major scale based Bollywood songs.

About Suchismita Acharya: Suchismita Acharya is renowned flautist known to the world as an exemplary disciple of renowned and highly decorated flute exponent, Padmavibhushan Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia. She is also known to be the other half of the duo, known as ‘flute sisters’. The flute sisters consist of Suchismita and her sister Debopriya both refined artists excelling in playing flute in Hindustani style. Suchismita did her masters in music from Rotterdam World Music Conservatory in Amsterdam, through the Nuffic scholarship she earned from the Indian embassy in Netherlands. She has also been honoured with the Sangeet Prabhakar, (bachelor degree in music) for flute and vocal and Sangeet Praveen, (masters degree in music) flute and vocal from the distinguished Prayag Sangeet Samiti in Allahabad. Suchismita has been fortunate to have performed in the company of her guru, besides travelling in and outside of India, exhibiting her talent at different concerts.  Suchismita’s talent and skill have been further accentuated with the recognition and honour of being identified as Sur Mani in 2001 and the Sahara Excellence Award in 2013.

Can students who are complete freshers enroll for this course?
Answer
There is no restriction as such but it will be better if they know the finger and blowing techniques.

Will the bollywood songs taught during the course be the choice of the student or will the teacher decide?
Answer
Students will not be able to play songs of their choice as the technicalities will vary. As such songs selected by the teacher will be taught which makes it easier for students to understand and comprehend.

Will students get to learn vocals as well through this course or all exercises will be flute based?
Answer
Yes, singing is important as it helps students conceive the song on the flute.

How much time should a student enrolling for this course practice everyday?
Answer
Students should practice a minimum of half an hour to 45 min. Everyday.

What extras would the student receive as course material apart from the live sessions?
Answer
Students may get recorded audio files, written notes through ipassio Studio or WhatsApp.

What if a student is unable to attend an upcoming class?
Answer
The student is required to inform the teacher about his absence from a particular session, one day prior to the class. In such a case, the teacher will reschedule the class and conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student. In case the student misses to give two days prior notice about his absence to the teacher, then the decision to conduct another class for that student is completely based on teacher’s discretion.

Answer
In case the teacher is unavailable for the scheduled class, he/she will inform the students one day prior to the class. The teacher will conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student.

Answer
The teacher will try to revert back to queries raised after class hours within a 24 hour period.

Students enrolling for this course should be attentive and practice regularly.

Can this course be customized?
Answer
The beginning or the basics cannot be customized, however customization can take place after the student has learnt 12 basic notes and the 3 techniques of playing the flute.

How long will it take students to learn the flute?
Answer
The learning process is never ending, however it would take around six months to learns the basic notes and get used to playing the scale effortlessly. It would take around one year to learn other techniques on the flute and get used to them comfortably.

Would there be an assessment to gauge the progress of students? Would they get certified on completion of this course? Will they get guidance on preparing for examinations conducted by a university or institute?
Answer
Students will not be getting assessed as it put undue pressure on them. They will get feedback. Students wishing to earn a certificate will be guided to get a certificate from one of the premier institutes of music.
