Course Details
This long term beginners course is best suited for students wishing to specialise on the ancient Indian percussion instrument, Tabla, in the long run. This course is designed to give students a perfect start by first introducing Tabla as an instrument, its make and maintenance. Training them on the positioning of hands on the Tabla and exercising their fingers to strengthen and getting accustomed to comfortably playing the instrument. Further on, this long term course introduces and emphasises on playing Tabla both as a solo as well as in the accompaniment of other musical instruments and/or any instrumental song. The students will be informed about different gharanas of music as per their requirements. However, the Delhi gharana style of music will be practiced and taught in detail throughout this course.
Further on, it explains and discusses about ragas in relation to their speciality to a taal, as well as the different methods of playing these ragas. Students are then familiarized with specific taals like Dadra, Kaharwa, Teen Taal, Rupak, Jhap Taal, Ektaal, Chautaal, Dhamaar, Mattaal and rhythm. Moving on in the course students are tutored to understand music vocabulary in detail, an important component in respect to playing the Tabla. They are also taught the advanced level of writing and interpreting notations in order to play it on the instrument, Tabla. In the later stages students are taught to identify the different patterns of music in songs, bhajans or ghazals. They are also taught to improvise as well as play in sync to the lap claps and match the rhythm on the Tabla. This long term course also looks to equip students with the knowledge to tune the Tabla, a requirement when playing for longer hours. Furthermore students are instructed on the use of metronome, that indicates the exact tempo of a piece of music.

About Alpesh Moharir: Alpesh can easily be identified as someone who was born to excel in playing the Tabla. As with any maestro, Alpesh’s inclination towards mastering the Tabla began at an early age. He evolved into an exceptional Tabla player after undergoing training in the guidance of Guru Shri Sudhirkumar Saxena. The training adhering to the guru, shishya parampara or the teacher and disciple tradition, ensured Alpesh went through the rigors of training, residing with his master. The detailed training helped strengthen the foundation of music and paved the way for him to successfully graduate with a masters in music. His dedication towards music saw him earn a scholarship from Northampton University in the UK to study fusion music. Alpesh served a few years as faculty teaching Tabla to primary and elementary level students in the UK, before making a comeback to India to start his own training academy named Sanmuk Music Education, training in Indian classical music and western instrumental music. Alpesh has travelled extensively, performing and winning accolades for his exceptional command over Tabla.
