Course Summary

This course is a foundational course for students wishing to learn to play violin in Hindustani classical style. The course will delve into two different ragas and their relationship with time. Hindustani classical ragas are categorised in terms of the time of the day when they can be played. Students enrolling for this course will learn ragas in relation to the time of day. They also get to polish their violin playing techniques, learning about the sitting posture, holding the violin as well as tuning it as per their need.

About the Course

Students enrolling for this short term course to learn to play the violin will first get to know, a brief history of the instrument, violin. Next up, students will be introduced to the stringed instruments and its features. Further, in the course, students learn the correct sitting posture when playing the violin, alongside understanding on how to hold the bow and the finger techniques required. Progressing further the course will introduce students to two different ragas, namely raga bhupali and raga bhairav, their structure and the way to render it on the violin. They also learn about the significance of the ragas in relation to the different time frames in a day. Students will also be taught about teen tala or a rhythm cycle of 16 beats. This course will then divulge into training the students on playing the ragas in tandem with the 16 beat rhythmic cycle. Besides learning the basics of the two ragas and teen tala, students also get to learn about the prevalent terminologies in Hindustani classical music, to help students comprehend better. By the culmination of this course, the student would be well versed with the positioning of the violin, finger movements, holding the bow and fine tuning the violin, alongside the capability to render basic compositions set in raga bhupali and bhairav adhering to the rhythm cycle of teen tala.

About Sharat Chandra Srivastava: Born in the family of legendary violinist Pt. Joi Srivastava, Sharat Chandra Srivastava was destined to carry forward his grandfather's legacy. Sharat started playing at a nascent age of seven under the able guidance of his grandfather, specialising in the senia gharana style of Hindustani classical music. Playing on the circuit for the last twenty five years, Sharat has very capably handled the responsibility of carrying forward the art of playing the violin. In fact, to his credit, he has been able to make violin playing blend with the demands of time. He was for a period of twelve years, a performing member of the well known rock band, ‘Parikrama’. His effortless style of play has taken him far and wide to countries like the UK , Scotland and Switzerland, training students on the stringed instrument at university level. He has also imparted training at the prestigious Gandharva Mahavidyalaya for a period of nine years. Sharat’s talent has seen him perform with some of the well known names in hindustani classical music, personalities such as Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Padma Vibhushan Pt. Hariprasad Chourasia and Pt. Birju Maharaj. Presently Sharat is involved with another unique effort called ‘Mrigya’, an endeavour to infuse Indian classical music with blues to enthrall audiences both in the east and the west.
