Q: How long should I practice on a daily basis?

At the beginner’s level, it is important that you get into the habit of practicing music every day. At this stage sitting for 20 to 30 minutes is sufficient.

Q: What if I can’t attend a scheduled class?

If you can’t attend a scheduled, you have to inform the teacher in advance. In that case, your teacher will take the class on or before ending of the ensuing week (Saturday) or a time that is mutually decided between you and the teacher. But if you forget to inform your teacher about your absence, then the decision to take an alternative class will be completely on the discretion of your teacher.

Q: How long will a teacher take to revert to my queries after class hours?

You should get a response within 24 hours if the teacher is not preoccupied or traveling.

Q: What if the teacher wishes to reschedule a class?

If the teacher is unavailable for the scheduled class, he/she will inform you two days before the class. The teacher will conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student.

About the Course

It takes about a year to learn the fundamentals of Carnatic music properly. It is suitable for those who already know the basics of Carnatic music. This course covers many basic exercises and compositions.

The first exercise is Sarali varisai. It helps students learn the swarams (notes) in the octave. Students practice it in both ascending and descending order and at different speeds.
Next is Janta varisai. This exercise also helps students learn the swarams, but in pairs.
Dhāttu varisai exercises teach swarams in a zig-zag pattern. This helps students gain more control over the notes and learn different combinations.
Melthayi varisai exercises help students sing in higher octaves.
Geetham means melody or song. It is the first type of song students will learn. These songs are short, and students will sing both the lyrics and the swaram patterns.
Varnam is more complex and covers many aspects of Carnatic music. It is often the first song sung at a Carnatic concert to warm up.
