The course is divided into theoretical and practical segments.
The theoretical curriculum includes the following topics -
- One class - dedicated to learning the introduction and definition of Ghazal. In addition - a short historical background and the different Gharanas of Ghazals./
- One class - to understand the structure of Ghazals. And also, proper dialect and pronunciations in Ghazals
- One class - to get oriented with the accompanying instruments - Harmonium and Tabla. And also, improvisations in Ghazal
- One class - to learn the examples of how Ghazals are performed in recitals. Learn about eminent Ghazal maestros in India and Pakistan
Practical :
- One class - Brief introduction of ragas used in Ghazals
- Two classes - First Ghazal: "Ranjish hi sahi ,dil dukhane ke liye aaa"
- One class - New Ghazal: "Kal chaudhavi ki raat thi"
- Two classes - Mastering of "Aaj jane ki zid na karo" Ghazal
- One class - Lighter form of Ghazal: "Ye daulat bhi le lo"
- One class - Conclusion and Wrap up of the course
About the Teacher
Dhriti Chatterjee, a versatile performer, trainer, and vocal coach, is deeply immersed in the world of music. Currently, Dhriti Chatterjee is under the tutelage of the renowned Vidushi Pandita Padmashree Shubha Mudghalji. She has received rigorous training in the Vishnupore gharana under the guidance of Acharya Jayanta Bose from a very young age. Furthermore, she has benefitted from the expertise of artists like Vidushi Suhasini Koratkarji, Vidushi Padma Talwalkarji, and more.
Dhriti Chatterjee's academic pursuits include an M.A. in Indian Classical Music from Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women’s University (S.N.D.T), Pune, and an M.A. in Sociology from the University of Calcutta.
She currently holds the position of a Vocal Music Teacher at Ruby Park Public School in Kolkata. Her performances in Indian Classical and Semi-Classical music have graced stages across India and abroad, captivating audiences with varied musical tastes. Some noteworthy events include - Swarazhankar and Malhar SurUtsav, as well as events like Swar Suman and the Raipur Bengali Community Music Festival. - You should have experience learning Indian classical/semi-classical vocal music at least for 2 years before enrolling for this course. It is recommended that you complete the course - Introduction to Vocal Music.
- You should have a good ear for music and an appreciation for Ghazals as a musical genre.
- You should have an acoustic or electronic tanpura or an android tanpura application. Additionally, you should have an electronic tabla or android tabla application.
