Course Summary

This course will train students in the advanced levels of playing the bamboo flute in Hindustani style. Students will be taught advanced techniques of fingering, playing complex compositions and ragas. They will also be taught less complex classical bhajans and Bollywood songs. By the culmination of this course, the student is expected to have vastly improved on his fingering techniques apart from the understanding and ability to play complex ragas, few bhajans and Bollywood songs on the flute.

This course looks to advance on the lessons taught in the basics course. Students in this long term course are introduced to the advanced level of finger techniques essential for improvisation and playing at speed. Further on in this course, students will be taught ten different ragas to add to their repertoire of flute ragas learn in the basics course. Students will learn popular ragas such as bihag, desh, bageshree, vachaspati, shuddh sarang, nat bhairav, bhimpalasi, jait, bhairav and malkauns. They will be taught the techniques to render the mentioned talas in advance tala structures. This course will enable students to graduate from the novice level to proficient by making them practice the different ragas in advanced talas. They will learn different improvisation techniques and techniques to play the instrument at speed. This course will also create a strong foundation in educating students on theory enabling students to understand the raga and the different aspects within the raga. It would educate them about the tala structure and its application in terms of the different ragas. Students by the culmination of this course would also be trained on a few classical bhajan and Bollywood songs.

About Suchismita Acharya: Suchismita Acharya is renowned flautist known to the world as an exemplary disciple of renowned and highly decorated flute exponent Padmavibhushan Pt. Hariprasad Chourasia. She is also known to be the other half of the duo, known as ‘flute sisters’. The flute sisters consist of Suchismita and her sister Debopriya both refined artists excelling in playing the flute in hindustani style. Suchismita did her masters in music from Rotterdam World Music Conservatory in Amsterdam, through the Nuffic scholarship she earned from the Indian embassy in Netherlands. She has also been honored with the sangeet prabhakar, (bachelor degree in music) for flute and vocal and sangeet praveen, (masters degree in music) flute and vocal from the distinguished Prayag Sangeet Samiti in Allahabad. Suchismita has been fortunate to have performed in the company of her guru, besides travelling in and outside of India, exhibiting her talent at different concerts.  Suchismita’s talent and skill have been further accentuated with the recognition and honor of being identified as Sur Mani in 2001 and the Sahara Excellence Award in 2013.

Students should practice a minimum of an hour everyday. If they can devote more time to practice it will them learn better and faster.

What if a student is unable to attend an upcoming class?
Answer
The student is required to inform the teacher about his absence from a particular session, two days prior to the class. In such a case, the teacher will reschedule the class and conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student. In case the student misses to give two days prior notice about his absence to the teacher, then the decision to conduct another class for that student is completely based on teacher’s discretion.

In case the teacher is unavailable for the scheduled class, he/she will inform the students two days prior to the class. The teacher will conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student.

Customization can take place after the student has learnt 12 basic notes and the 3 techniques of playing the flute. As this will be an advanced course customization is possible.

How does the student plan his practice?
Answer
Students are advised to concentrate on one technique each day. Repeating only one technique each day would yield more success and improvement rather than practicing everything each day.

Why do students need to learn ragas?
Answer
We need to learn ragas so as to understand the scale and improvise on a given scale. Mostly all songs are based on a scale.. So it would help students to play them better and also improvise them.

How long will it take students to learn the flute?
Answer
The learning process is never ending , however it would take around six months to learns the basic notes and get used to playing the scale effortlessly. It would take around one year to learn other techniques on the flute and get used to them comfortably.

Would there be an assessment to gauge the progress of students? Would they get certified on completion of this course? Will they get guidance on preparing for examinations conducted by a university or institute?
Answer
Students will not be getting assessed as it put undue pressure on them. They will get feedback. Students wishing to earn a certificate will be guided to get a certificate from one of the premier institutes of music.
