  • About the Course

This course is the foundation course for learning the Indian percussion instrument tabla. This course is designed to introduce the students to tabla as an instrument, the elements that make up the tabla and their description. Students enrolling will in the first few lessons learn on how to sit in front of the tabla set. As tabla is played sitting down, it is important for students to learn the technique to ensure they are at ease when playing the instrument. Once the students have grasped the posture, the next lessons will lead students to understand the basics of tabla notations. Students will learn the significance of different terms that constitute a tabla notation. Terms like matra, vibhag, taali, khaali will be discussed with students to enable a clear understanding and interpretation of notations. Moving on students will be taught some basic exercises to get the feel of the tabla and to exercise the fingers. Next, students get to learn about teen taal, a 16 beat rhythmic cycle. Teen taal, also referred to as the king of taals is a preferred tala for musicians especially the solo artist. Students will get to practice basic compositions in teen taal to get them accustomed to the emanating sound and finger movement. In the later stage of this course, students will get to learn the recital of different compositions vocally before moving ahead to practice it on the tabla.

After successful completion of this course, students can gear themselves for the other courses by Sunayana Ghosh: Taals on Tabla | Hindustani Classical and Complex Compositions On Tabla | Hindustani Classical | Learning Tabla Online
