This course is the foundation course for learning the Indian percussion instrument tabla. This course is designed to introduce to students tabla as an instrument, the elements that make up the tabla and their description. Students enrolling will in the first few lessons learn on how to sit in front of the tabla set. As tabla is played sitting down, it is important for students to learn the technique to ensure they are at ease when playing the instrument. Once the students have grasped the posture, the next lessons will lead students to understand the basics of tabla notations. Students will learn the significance of different terms that constitute a tabla notation. Terms like matra, vibhag, taali, khaali will be discussed with students to enable a clear understanding and interpretation of notations. Moving on students will be taught some basic exercises to get the feel of the tabla and to exercise the fingers. Next, students get to learn about teen taal, a 16 beat rhythmic cycle. Teen taal, also referred to as the king of taals is a preferred tala for musicians especially the solo artist. Students will get to practice basic compositions in teen taal to get them accustomed to the emanating sound and finger movement. In the later stage of this course, students will get to learn the recital of different compositions vocally before moving ahead to practice it on the tabla.

About Sunayana Ghosh: Sunayana’s attraction to rhythm and beats started at an early age when she picked up learning the tabla at the tender age of six. Her mother a vocalist has been a major influence in the life of the gifted tabla player. Sunayna groomed her tabla playing skills, initially under the guidance of Samar Mitra and later under the renowned tabla exponent, late Pt. Shankar Ghosh of the Farrukhabad gharana and continued training under the guidance of his son tabla maestro Bikram Ghosh. Today Sunayana is a renowned female tabla player who has showcased her talent both in India and abroad. Sunayna’s talent is not restricted to just tabla as she is also trained in Kathak as well as vocals.
This course enables students to confidently step into the world of tabla play. Students learn about reading, writing and interpreting tabla notations. They also get to understand tala structure through the practice of teen taal. Students also get trained on recitals which are the vocal mimic of bols or beats on the tabla, helping them comprehend better.
