As compared to violin or flute, it is easier to play the basic notes in veena as a beginner. Once you get a good understanding of hand positioning and frets, you can start playing simple notes. It is advised to learn veena directly from the teacher so that your doubts can be answered instantly as opposed to video learning. It could take years of practice to play small kritis and songs perfectly. But with the right veena teacher, your practice sessions will be more engaging and you’ll be constantly in love with the instrument. It is not mandatory for a beginner to have an in-depth understanding of Carnatic theoretical knowledge. Your veena teacher can help you understand the notes while taking practical exercises.
ipassio allows personalized veena classes directly from the teacher. They teach you how to play veena the right way via online video conferencing. Veena teachers available on the platform are some of the best in India. They are renowned Carnatic musicians with decades of experience. You’ll learn the best ways to play different veena notes, and exercises that can help you practice the instrument. Based on the student’s skills and level of knowledge, the teacher will change the lessons accordingly.
Heavy emphasis is placed on South Indian Carnatic tradition while covering veena lessons. Students will start with the basic knowledge of talam and swara sthana. Vocally learning Alankaras can speed up your learning. Jantai varisai and sarali varisai will be covered in the due course. If for beginners, various swaras, taalas will also be taught. Intermediate to advanced students will learn varnams and compositions and various uniques techniques that bolster your Saraswati veena learning.
The earliest mention of Veena was in Rigveda and Samaveda in the first millennium BCE. The original Sanskrit word ‘veena’ refers to any plucked string instrument. A veena similar to what we use today is shown as being played by Goddess Saraswati in the 6th century CE. The version with seven strings and 24 frets became standard between the 10th and 11th centuries CE. Modern digital veenas, developed in the 2000s have an amplifier and speaker built-in.
